Berita Harian’s Achiever of the Year 2017 was celebrated in a style befitting the national Malay paper’s 60 years in journalism.
Amid the pounding drum beats by Nadi Singapura, Singapore’s president, Mdm Halimah Yacob entered the Grand Mandarin Ballroom at Mandarin Orchard Singapore to a crowd of over 500 distinguished guests.
This year’s winner, Mr Abu Bakar Mohd Nor, showed grit and tenacity through the years, rising through the ranks with a diploma from Singapore Polytechnic to his current position as Managing Director of gas and specialised vessels at Keppel Offshore & Marine.
He received the award due to his exceptional professional achievements as well as his contributions serving in external organisers.
He epitomises the annual awards organised by Berita Harian, which recognises Malay/Muslim individuals for their achievements in their chosen fields, and for their display of perseverance, determination, integrity, and the ability to overcome the odds. They must also be regarded as a role model in the Malay/Muslim community in Singapore.
Meanwhile, 30-year-old Ms Nur Yusrina Ya’akob, who is the first Malay/Muslim woman from Singapore to scale the summits of the world’s highest peak, Mt Everest, received the Young Achiever of the Year Award.
Mr Mohd Saat Abdul Rahman, Editor of Berita Harian, said: “Ms Nur Yusrina Ya’akob has displayed tenacity and fearlessness in the face of difficult physical conditions to reach the peak of Mt Everest. She is a deserving recipient of the Young Achiever Award 2017.”
As part of Berita Harian’s 60th anniversary this year, two Lifetime Achiever Award recipients and four Business Achiever Award recipients are also honoured. These awards are presented to the recipients in recognition of their contributions and achievements in their chosen fields.
