Berita Harian honours inspiring achievers and pioneers

For his dedication to the community, leadership in navigating the challenging religious landscape and commitment to fostering inter-faith harmony, former Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) president Mohammad Alami Musa was conferred the BH Achiever of the Year award at the award ceremony held at Raffles City Convention Centre on August 19. Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister, was the Guest-of-Honour for this event.

Commenting on the award, Mr Alami said: "I am but one of the many helping hands in the present cohort of activists who are contributing to community building efforts. I see this as an award in the spirit of collective effort."

The annual award, now in its 17th year, is organised by Berita Harian. It honours Malay/Muslim individuals and organisations for their achievements in their chosen fields, be it education, business, arts and culture, sports, the professions or social work. Above all, winners must be role models for the Malay/Muslim community.

Berita Harian also conferred the Berita Harian Young Achiever Award (Anugerah Jauhari Marican) to two outstanding young members of the Malay community this year  — Amalina Ridzuan and Ahmad Abdurrahman Hanifah Marican. Both winners are the first students from madrasahs to be accepted into NUS School of Medicine. Along with the award, both recipients also received a $5,000 cash award, sponsored by Management Development Institute of Singapore (MDIS). This award is given to young inspiring Malay/Muslim Singaporeans aged 30 and below.

This year, in conjunction with SG50, Berita Harian also presented three Pioneer Generation Achiever Awards to Malay pioneers Dr Muhammad Ariff Ahmad, 90, veteran writer and retired lecturer; Shaikh Syed Isa Semait, 76, former Mufti of Singapore; and batik master Sarkasi Said, 75.

BH editor Mohd Saat Abdul Rahman said: "We feel it is an excellent time to pay tribute to our pioneers as the nation celebrates 50 years of independence."
