Feats of strength at the Shin Min ABC Powerman Challenge

Thirty-two strong men battled it out at the grand finals of the annual Shin Min ABC Powerman Challenge 2015 held at S11 Ang Mo Kio 711 coffeeshop on January 16.

The finalists made it to the last stage from the competition’s preliminary rounds at four selected coffee shops across the island over the last two months.

Student Tay Jia Jun, 19, and full-time national serviceman Melvin Loh, 21, won the competition for the under 70kg category and above 70kg category respectively.  They each took home the grand prize of $1,000 cash and the challenge trophy.

The public also had the chance to participate in two other strength challenges namely, “Power Hammer Challenge” and “Power Stretcher Challenge”. The overall winners of each of these strength challenges walked away with $500 in cash and a medal.

Besides the show of physical prowess by the challengers, audience were entertained with performances by popular getai singers Hao Hao (皓皓), Choo Li Li (朱莉莉),  Jessica Tan (陈诗婷) and Vanessa Voon (温丝婷).

Mr Choo Chee Wee, associate editor of Shin Min Daily News, said the event was held at coffee shops because it is where most of the paper’s readers like to congregate.  He added: “Shin Min wants to continue to engage its readers and provide them with an event near them.”
