Tests of Strength at the Shin Min Powerman Challenge

Shin Min Daily News presented the inaugural edition of the Shin Min Powerman Challenge finals on Saturday 25 January 2014 at Kovan Hub.  The event was sponsored by ABC Extra Stout and hosted by UFM 100.3 DJs Ye Li Mei and renowned artiste, Jessica Tan.

The grand finalists for the Shin Min Arm Wrestling Challenge were selected through a series of roadshows held at selected coffeeshops islandwide in December 2013.  To qualify for the grand finals, participants had to arm-wrestle a robotic arm and move it down a certain angle.

Mr Valen Low, a 20-year-old student at Republic Polytechnic won the competition.  He beat 23 finalists and took home the grand prize of $1,000 cash and the challenge trophy.  Mr Low intends to use his cash prize as his expenses when he flies to Melbourne to represent Singapore in the FitX arm-wrestling competition on March 9.

For the first time, the public also had the chance to participate in three other strength challenges namely, Power Hammer Challenge, Beer Crate Lifting Challenge and Wheel Flipping Challenge.

The three overall winners of each of these strength challenges walked away with $500 in cash and a medal.  Five consolation prizes of $100 cash and a medal were presented at each of the three challenges.

Winner for the Wheel Flipping Challenge was awarded to a 20-year-old full-time national serviceman Don Neo, who described the game as “a tough challenge”.  He said, “The floor was very slippery, so it was hard to maintain balance whole moving the tire forward.  I almost slipped and fell during the challenge.”

Besides the show of physical prowess by the challengers, there were also exciting stage games and performances by the Baobei Sisters, Vanessa Voon and Eric Du who entertained the crowd with popular songs, including familiar Chinese New Year tunes to bring out the festive spirit.

Mr Graham Villiers-Tuthill, Marketing Manager - Dark Beers of Asia Pacific Breweries Singapore is very pleased with the event.  He said, “We are very happy with the inaugural SM Powerman Challenge.  The platform offered us an opportunity to gain valuable media space in Shin Min Daily News and entertained consumers at on-ground events island wide.
